Special Issue Synopsis
Over the past five decades, the pace of technological developments has shown an exponential growth. This remarkable progress has led many urban scholars, policymakers, and practitioners to perceive innovative artificial intelligence (AI) enabled technologies as a critical means of alleviating many problems of urbanization. Today, AI technologies are being deployed across all domains of local government operations and services. We have chatbots that enable 24/7 citizen engagement, robotics that perform automated utility operations, deep learning systems to provide insights into the vast reservoirs of datasets housed in local governments, as well as unmanned drones for measuring various elements within a city (e.g., heat, greenspaces, and so on). There is no arguing that AI-enabled systems will play a critical role in modernizing our cities. However, no matter how advanced a computational solution is, it needs to be accompanied by an adequately advanced responsible innovation and governance framework. Given that we are in the early days of deploying AI systems in our communities (from neighborhoods to towns and cities), there is a dire need for discourse on current advances and on what is being done, so that we can determine what works (for understanding success factors), and even more importantly, what has not worked (for understanding failure factors). Recognizing this gap, the Journal of Urban Technology will publish a Special Issue on ‘Artificial Intelligence and the City’ to consolidate our understanding of AI in the context of cities.
Special Issue Themes
This Special Issue of the Journal of Urban Technology will expand scholarly knowledge by curating interdisciplinary state-of-the-art research on the general topic of ‘AI and the City’. The Special Issue welcomes theoretical and empirical research articles along with literature studies on the following themes, where other relevant themes will also be considered:
- AI adoption, integration, affordance
- AI algorithms, applications, platforms
- AI and community and user perceptions
- AI and its explainable, ethical, frugal, trustworthy qualities
- AI and responsible urban innovation
- AI and urban big data and analytics
- AI benefits, costs, impacts, risks
- AI best practices
- AI conceptual and practical frameworks
- AI deployment planning, design, management
- AI failure and success factors
- AI for local economy
- AI for local government
- AI for public services
- AI for smart cities
- AI for smart homes
- AI for sustainable development
- AI for the built environment and construction
- AI for urban climate change
- AI for urban communities
- AI for urban disaster management
- AI for urban ecosystem conservation
- AI for urban infrastructures, services, amenities
- AI for urban mobility
- AI for urban planning and development
- AI for urban policy and governance
Contribution Types
We welcome contributions in the following formats:
- Systematic literature review (max. 8,000 words): Identifies, appraises, and synthesizes all the empirical evidence that meets pre-specified eligibility criteria to answer a research question.
- Meta-analysis (max. 8,000 words): Analyses data from independent studies quantitatively to determine overall trends and derive conclusions about that body of research.
- Original research (max. 8,000 words): Makes a substantial contribution to theory, method, application, or practice through experimental or empirical study or conceptual discussions.
Submission Formatting and dates
- Manuscripts will follow the paper submission guidelines provided on the journal website. You can find more information about formatting under the section ‘Instructions for authors’ https://www.tandfonline.com/action/authorSubmission?show=instructions&journalCode=cjut20.
- Extended Abstract Submission: Authors with interests and research in AI in the context of cities should submit their extended abstracts of 300–500 words to the guest editors via email by 1 December 2022.
- Manuscript Submission: Following to an editorial review process, submission with caliber and good fit will be invited to submit their manuscript to the Special Issue through the journal’s submission platform by 1 May 2023. All submissions will undergo double-blind peer-review.
- Release of the Special Issue: Accepted manuscripts, following to a double-blind peer-review process, will be published online asap. The Special Issue is expected to be finalized and assigned to an issue in 2024.
